Privacy policy for QR code reader

This Privacy Policy describes how we (“we,” “us,” or “our”) handle information when you use the QR Scanner Android application (the “App”). QR Scanner lets you scan and read QR codes and barcodes using your device camera, screen, or image files; create QR codes; and manage scan history on your device.

By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

Information We Collect

We collect or process the following categories of information:

Scan data and history (stored on your device)

To provide the App’s core features, the App processes QR code and barcode data that you scan or create. Depending on the code type, this may include:

  • Text, URLs, phone numbers, email addresses, SMS messages, and contact or address information
  • Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs), passwords, and related connection details contained in Wi-Fi QR codes
  • Calendar event information, geographic coordinates, and other structured data encoded in supported QR formats
  • Product or barcode numbers and related metadata
  • Scan timestamps, categories, tags, favorites, and other history organization data

This information is processed and stored locally on your device (for example, in app databases and exported backup files). We do not operate our own server to collect or store your scan data, and we do not sell this information.

Please note that scan history may contain sensitive information (such as passwords, personal contact details, or private URLs). You are responsible for managing, exporting, and deleting this data as appropriate for your needs.

Camera, image, and screen content (processed on your device)

When you scan with the camera, from shared images or PDF files, or using the screen scan feature, the App processes visual content on your device to detect and decode codes. This processing occurs locally on your device for scanning purposes. We do not upload your camera feed, screen contents, or imported images to our servers.

App settings and user content (stored on your device)

The App stores preferences and configuration data locally, such as:

  • Scan settings, sound and vibration preferences, and UI options
  • QR code design settings, including colors, logos, and user-selected images used when creating codes
  • Import and export settings, including custom file name prefixes
  • Backup, import, and export files that you create or choose to store on your device

Installed app information (processed on your device)

If you use features that create QR codes linked to installed apps, the App may read information about apps installed on your device (such as app names, package names, and icons) to display a selection list. This information is processed locally on your device and is not transmitted to us.

Automatically collected information (third-party services)

When you use the App, certain information may be collected automatically by third-party services integrated into the App, including:

  • Device information (such as device model, operating system version, and language)
  • App version and general usage information
  • IP address and network-related information
  • Advertising ID, where available and permitted
  • Crash logs, error reports, and diagnostic information

In release builds of the App, Firebase Analytics (Google) may collect usage information automatically. Firebase Crashlytics (Google) may collect crash and error reports. Analytics is included only in release builds.

Advertising-related information

The App displays advertisements through Google AdMob. Depending on your consent choices and device settings, AdMob and related Google services may collect information such as:

  • Advertising ID
  • Ad interactions (for example, impressions and clicks)
  • Device and app information used to serve and measure ads

The App uses Google User Messaging Platform (UMP) to request consent where required, including for personalized advertising. If you do not consent to personalized ads, the App may request non-personalized ads instead.

Purchase information

If you purchase a premium subscription or one-time premium feature through Google Play Billing, payment processing is handled by Google. We do not receive or store your full payment card details. Google may provide us with purchase status information needed to enable premium features, such as whether a purchase is active.

Information you choose to send us

If you contact us by email, you may choose to include information such as your message, email address, and device details (for example, app version, device model, and Android version). We use this information only to respond to your inquiry.

How We Use Information

We use the information described above for the following purposes:

To provide, operate, and maintain App features, including camera scanning, screen scanning, image and PDF scanning, QR code creation, history management, and related actions (such as opening URLs or connecting to Wi-Fi networks when you choose)

  • To save your preferences and restore App settings on your device
  • To display advertisements and, where permitted, measure ad performance
  • To analyze App usage and improve stability, performance, and user experience
  • To detect, prevent, and address crashes, errors, and technical issues
  • To process and verify premium purchases and provide ad-free or premium features
  • To comply with applicable laws and enforce our terms
  • To respond to support requests and user inquiries

We do not use your scan history or decoded QR code content for advertising profiling, and we do not share scan data with third parties for their independent use.

Permissions Used by the App

The App requests certain Android permissions to function. These include:

  • Camera (CAMERA): to scan QR codes and barcodes using your device camera
  • Flashlight (FLASHLIGHT): to control the camera flash during scanning, when supported
  • Storage (READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE): to save, import, export, and share scan history, QR code images, and backup files
  • Wi-Fi state (ACCESS_WIFI_STATE, CHANGE_WIFI_STATE): to connect to Wi-Fi networks from Wi-Fi QR codes when you choose to do so
  • Notification permission (POST_NOTIFICATIONS): to show notifications for screen scan results and related alerts
  • Screen capture (MediaProjection, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PROJECTION): to scan QR codes displayed on your device screen when you start screen scanning
  • Foreground service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE): to run screen scanning while the feature is active
  • Internet and network state (INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE): for ads, app updates, billing, maps used in QR creation features, and third-party services
  • Advertising ID permission (AD_ID): required for advertising on supported Android versions
  • Vibrate (VIBRATE): for scan feedback, where enabled
  • Google Play Billing (com.android.vending.BILLING): to process premium purchases and subscriptions

The App does not request location permissions (such as ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION or ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION). Location-related QR codes may contain coordinates encoded in the code itself, and map-based QR creation features may use Google Maps without accessing your device’s GPS location unless you choose to share location through your device or Google Maps separately.

Background Processing

The App may run a foreground service while screen scanning is active. During screen scanning, the App captures screen content on your device to detect QR codes and may show a notification while scanning is in progress. Screen content used for scanning is processed locally on your device to provide App functionality.

The App also provides Quick Settings tiles that let you start camera or screen scanning from your device’s quick settings panel.

Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party services, which may collect information according to their own privacy policies:

  • Google AdMob (advertising)
  • Google User Messaging Platform (UMP) (advertising consent)
  • Firebase Analytics (usage analytics, release builds)
  • Firebase Crashlytics (crash and error reporting)
  • Google Play Billing (in-app purchases and subscriptions)
  • Google Play In-App Review (optional review prompts)
  • Google Play In-App Update (app update prompts)
  • Google Maps (map display for location-related QR code creation features)

These services are provided by Google LLC and/or its affiliates. Their handling of information is governed by Google’s policies, including:

The App also uses open-source libraries for scanning, UI, file handling, and utility features (such as barcode scanning, image cropping, and CSV/Excel export). These libraries operate locally on your device and are not used by us to collect personal information.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information.

We may share information only in the following circumstances:

  • With service providers that help us operate the App (such as Google for ads, analytics, crash reporting, billing, and maps), subject to their privacy policies
  • When required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request
  • To protect the rights, safety, and security of users, us, or others
  • In connection with a business transfer, such as a merger or acquisition, if applicable
  • Scan history, decoded code content, and locally stored App settings are not shared with third parties except as necessary to provide the App features described above (for example, displaying ads or processing purchases through Google services).

Data Retention

Information stored locally on your device remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App. You can also delete individual history entries, clear history, or remove exported files you created.

Information collected by third-party services is retained according to those providers’ policies and settings. You may be able to limit certain collection through your device settings, ad personalization settings, or consent choices presented in the App.

Data Deletion

To remove locally stored App data, you can:

  • Uninstall the App from your device, which removes local databases, preferences, and files stored by the App
  • Delete scan history entries within the App
  • Use import/export features to manage backup files stored on your device

Deleting the App does not delete information already collected by third-party services such as Google. To manage or delete data held by Google, refer to Google’s privacy tools and your Google account settings.

Data Security

We take reasonable measures designed to protect information handled by the App. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Because most App data is stored locally on your device, keeping your device secure (such as using a screen lock) helps protect your information. Scan history may contain sensitive decoded content, so please use caution when exporting or sharing backup files.

Children’s Privacy

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

Your Privacy Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal information, such as the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict certain processing, or to object to certain uses.

You can make the following choices in the App or on your device:

  • Manage ad consent through the consent flow provided in the App (Google UMP)
  • Reset your advertising ID or limit ad personalization in your Android device settings
  • Disable notifications in Android settings
  • Revoke permissions such as camera, storage, or notification access in Android settings
  • Delete scan history or uninstall the App to remove locally stored scan data
  • Cancel subscriptions through Google Play: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7018481

If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or other regions with similar laws, you may also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

International Data Transfers

Third-party service providers such as Google may process information on servers located outside your country of residence. By using the App, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in countries that may have different data protection laws than your country.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically. Continued use of the App after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy, unless applicable law requires otherwise.
